We’ve all seen the recent craze about avocados. It used to be that avocados can primarily be found in guacamole to make tacos and burritos tastier and more satisfying. But now there are avocado toasts, avocado ice cream, avocado shakes and even avocado oil. So is the avocado craze something we should buy into? Are avocados really healthy for you?
The answer is, YES, avocados are good for you – if eaten in moderation. Avocados are fruits that happen to be high in fat and low in sugar. Now before you panic at “high in fat”, keep in mind that avocados are high in the “good fat” or what is also known as monosaturated fat. Monosaturated fat is the fat found in nuts, olive oil, and canola oil. This good fat can help lower your “bad fat”. In addition to the good fat, avocados contain vitamins (Vitamin Bs, Vitamin E, Vitamin C), copper, fiber and potassium. These vitamins can help with healthy vision and boost your immune system.
There are wonderful benefits to eating avocados, but as with all foods, avocados need to be eaten in moderation. Avocados are packed with protein and are high in calories so we need to watch our portions. But the great thing about avocados is that you can eat them for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack. An avocado toast for breakfast, a salad topped with avocados for lunch, avocado pasta for dinner, or an avocado shake or ice cream for a snack. And for the ladies out there, what’s even cooler is that you can use avocados in a face mask to help your skin (I guess it helps having Vitamins C and E)!
Although the focus of this blog has been on staying healthy through an active lifestyle, it is also important to pay attention to what we are eating. This is why we’ve devoted recent articles on debunking food myths. By balancing what we put into our bodies with exercise, we can all breathe a little easier and live longer. Now it’s time for my avocado ice pop!
